If you’ve been lacking self-esteem because you don’t have one of the beaming smiles that you constantly see shining off the pages of every magazine, it may be starting to get you down. Taking steps to get your teeth realigned can be daunting for an adult, especially if you think that this is something that should have been done when you were a teenager. Thankfully, this isn’t the case. With Invisalign, also known as invisible braces, you can realign your teeth at any age, as long as you have all of your adult teeth. What’s even better is that you can do so discreetly, with the aim of increasing your confidence with your newly aligned smile.
How does it work?
With invisible braces, you will get clear plastic aligners that you change every couple of weeks. They are custom made to fit your mouth and so they are as comfortable as they can be. They apply a gentle pressure to your teeth, moving them gradually into the position your dentist wants them to move into. Most people will not notice that you are wearing them, so they are discreet, as well as comfortable. After treatment has been completed, you will also need to wear a retainer.
Any other benefits?
It is very important to look after your teeth and gums. This can be difficult to do, when wearing fixed metal braces, as they can’t be removed when brushing and flossing. However, with plastic aligners, these can be removed when eating and drinking, and when you are brushing and flossing. It is recommended that you wear the aligners for about 22 hours a day, which also leaves time for removing them when playing sports or attending a special event. This flexibility leaves you in control and should enable you to feel motivated when you are wearing them.
What do I need to do to get them?
If you are interested in trying this treatment, you need to have a consultation with your dentist. During this appointment, you can discuss your concerns about your teeth and your dentist will be able to answer any questions you may have. You may also have x-rays, impressions and scans taken of your teeth. Some dentists offer a 3D animation of how your teeth will look after treatment, if it is decided that this is the best course of treatment for your needs. It can be really exciting to see what your teeth will look like at the end of a 12-18 month treatment, although treatment times can vary.
If it is deemed an appropriate treatment for you, once you’ve had your x-rays and scans, your dentist will be able to get your aligners made based on the prescription they will write. You will then be given sets of aligners, which need to be changed every couple of weeks, and you will also visit your dentist for regular checkups.
What are you waiting for?
If you think that getting the smile you’ve dreamed of is at the top of your to-do list, and you love the idea of doing so discreetly, why not call your dentist to find out more? You don’t have to look at pictures of other people and keep wishing for a miracle, so that you can have a straighter smile; why not get the treatment you need and make your dreams come true?
