How does Invisalign treatment work?

A person’s smile can make or break how confident they feel about their appearance and about themselves in general. If they have teeth which are protruding, overcrowded or which feature gaps, then they might feel self-conscious and nervous about smiling and engaging with others. This can have a ripple effect across all areas of their life.

Fortunately, there is a way to correct these issues: clear braces. Many people have heard of this treatment but are unsure about what they get for the Invisalign cost in London. This is an exploration of what is involved and what the patient can expect during the process.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is the brand name for invisible braces. They are quite different from the traditional kind of braces that most people associate with getting orthodontic treatment. Instead of metal wires secured by brackets, they are composed of see-through trays of soft plastic that are slotted over the teeth. These trays are also referred to as aligners.

The first step

The first step in getting treatment with invisible braces is to find out how suitable one is as a candidate. There are two ways to do this. Firstly, the patient can visit their dentist or orthodontist to have a chat with them about their smile and ask about the possibility of getting aligners. The second option is to take some selfies and send them off electronically for evaluation.

Recording the position of the teeth

The next stage is to get an exact record taken of the position of the teeth. This can be done via two different means. The more traditional method is for the patient to bite into a mould in order to create impressions of the teeth. The other option is to have a 3D scan, which seamlessly examines and records the mouth from all angles.

Whichever method is used, this stage is important as it allows the dentist to provide aligners that match the individual teeth of the patient exactly, and to create a treatment plan.

Getting the braces

The tailor-made aligners can be given to the patient at the surgery, where they can be fitted, and the patient can ask questions about the process. Alternatively, some providers offer the option of having them delivered at home. This can be a great choice for those who lead very busy lives and who only have time for the most essential dental appointments.

Then, it is simply a case of wearing braces for most of the time every day. This includes during sleep. They are changed every few weeks for a set that differs slightly, and in this way move the teeth by providing gentle pressure over time.

Completing treatment

Treatment is usually quite quick and can be as little as a few months in many cases. This does vary among individuals, so it is worth checking how long it is expected to take before getting started. Once the process has been completed, it is usually recommended that the patient wears a retainer at night-time. This helps to maintain the new position of the teeth and allows them to enjoy the results in the long-term.
